Originally from Tunisia, North Africa, Mongi Zekri came to the University of Florida in August 1980 to continue his graduate studies. He received his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Horticulture (citrus production and physiology) in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He spent 5.5 years at the University of Florida Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred as a Research Associate working on salinity, plant nutrition, soil fertility, and irrigation of citrus. For 3.5 years, he had been the Director of Research for Jack M. Berry Company in LaBelle. Dr. Zekri spent one year at the University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead as a Project Manager working on fertilization and irrigation scheduling for tropical fruit crops. Since December 1997, he has been the southwest Florida Multi-County Citrus Agent. He is housed at the Hendry County Extension Office in LaBelle. He provides educational opportunities in citrus culture in the five counties of southwest Florida (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee). Dr. Zekri develops and implements educational programs, and provides technical expertise to commercial citrus growers. He coordinates training in farm safety including pesticide handling and use. He conducts urban citrus programs for master gardeners, homeowners, garden clubs, and other urban groups. He also carries out citrus programs for 4-H groups and students.
